What Bruce Boxleitner Had To Do To Find Fame!
Bruce Boxleitner, born in Elgin, Ill., received his first theatrical experience when he tried out for a high school play. Following graduation, Bruce didn't give college a second thought, but headed straight for Chicago and the Goodman Theatre, which is noted for its theatrical school. Bruce loved the stage experience and received his first break at the Ivanhoe Theatre in a local hit play, "Status Quo Vadis." "I got the lead part," Bruce tell us, "when the actor playing the role began giving the company a bit of trouble, and a week later I was playing the role. The Play did so well in the Chicago area, they decided to branch out and we took the play to the Arena Theatre in Washington, D.C., where it was also well received. Then we made the mistake of taking it to Broadway. The play died in New York."
After the play folded, Bruce stayed in New York for a time with Iittle success. He received an offer to play the same role he started with back in Chicago, which he accepted. It was then that he made his big decision and headed west. When asked about his first big film break, Bruce replied, "This is it. Luke Macahan."
Bruce appeared in one motion picture, "Six Pack Annie." He also did one episode of "Gunsmoke," producer John Mantley remembered his performance and cast him as Luke in "The ABC Monday Night Movie," "The Macahans" (Jan. 1976), the forerunner to "How The West Was Won." He then starred with James Arness in three two-hour movies of "How the West Was Won" during February, 1977, on the ABC Television Network.
Bruce's other credits while in Hollywood have been a role as a psychopathic lady-killer in an episode of "Police Woman" and a part on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."
Bruce is an avid sports enthusiast, especially enjoying fishing and backpacking. He keeps in good physical condition by running three miles a day. He is married to Kathryn Holcomb, and they reside in the canyon area between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley.
