Bruce Boxleitner just can't seem to get a break. A few weeks ago the actor was talking about Triangle, his new series for CBS, and told me, "I'm anxious to get up in the morning and go to work - it's a pleasant change." And for Boxleitner one that's a long time coming. His first starring series, CBS' Bring ëEm Back Alive, in 1982 lasted only one season. Boxleitner recalls, "It was depressing working and knowing the series had no future."
But, oh, what
a difference a year makes! In 1983, the actor was back in the catbird seat
with CBS' Scarecrow and Mrs. King. "Mrs. King" - Kate Jackson
- had a reputation for battling it out with management and the show's ever-changing
core of producers and directors, while Boxleitner says he tried to play
Mr. Nice Guy. "I tried to get along with everyone and the tension
just about drove me nuts. The brass tried to use me to get between them
and Kate."
Now, with Triangle, the actor's triangle of troubled series is complete. After some major rewriting and the recasting of a co-star, Boxleitner thought he had a winner. But then, just days after saying how happy he was that the show had worked out its problems, the lid blew off; CBS canceled the show before it ever got on the air. The network's terse explanation: "creative differences."
