interview was conducted by
phone and email, from September to
December 2007. Parts 3 and 4 were added in June 2009 and March 2010.

| The photo: "I remember that day so clearly. Ruben and I went to Panama for a week and stayed a month. He and his friend Claudio Fernandez thought it was OK for them to go out and leave me home with Claudio's family and I pitched a giant fit! So, Ruben took me to that football game in this vacant, dusty lot. I remember that the players could not have been more shocked to see me - like Rubencito had shown up with Elvis. They all could tell that Ruben wasn't thrilled that I was there as well. Why I remember it was that I was the only woman there. But after a few minutes - someone showed up with the battered metal folding chair for me and I sat there and watched the whole game. It was really fun and after awhile they forgot I was there. At that game, they convinced Rubencito to come back that night and sing with a local band out in the street. That was packed with people and fun. As to the event at the soccer field - after that Ruben and I walked all over Panama City for hours. That was great. As you know in parts of the City there are second story balconies and while we walked and talked people must have known we were there and when we looked up they were quietly watching us. It was really very nice." |

fuimos a Panamá por una semana y
terminamos por quedarnos todo un mes. El y su amigo Claudio
Fernández pensaron
que podrían dejarme en casa con la familia de Claudio pero les
salió el tiro
por la culata. Así que a Rubén no le
quedó más remedio que llevarme al juego de fútbol
en este lote vacante y
polvoriento. Recuerdo que los jugadores estaban un poco “inquietos” con mi presencia –como si Rubencito se hubiese aparecido allí con Elvis (Presley)-. Creo que se dieron cuenta de que Rubén no estaba muy a gusto con que yo estuviera allí. Recuerdo que era la única mujer allí. Después de algunos minutos alguien se apareció con una silla de metal destartalada para mi, me senté y vi todo el partido de fútbol. Fue muy divertido y después de un rato todos olvidaron que yo estaba allí. Durante el juego, convencieron a Rubéncito de que viniera a cantar esa noche con una de las orquestas locales, en la calle. El lugar estaba lleno, a reventar, pero fue muy divertido. Después del partido de fútbol, Rubén y yo caminamos por la ciudad de Panamá durante horas. Muchos de los edificios tienen balcones y, mientras caminábamos, la gente se percataba de que estabamos allí –cuando mirábamos hacia arriba observábamos a la gente, calladamente observándonos, al mismo tiempo-. Fue una muy bonita experiencia.” |
