The two brothers in the family were named Seth and Jed. It was the story of a tough pioneer family moving west, trying to escape the ravages of the Civil War.

Travel is dirty and difficult, as they make their way across the plains.
They meet dangerous natives, and dangerous ranchers.
   

Seth (Luke) goes looking for his father,who has been impressed into duty as a Yankee soldier. So is Seth, and is wounded, but he finds his father, who dies in his arms. Seth is sick of the killing and walks away from the war, but through misunderstanding is nearly hanged as either a deserter or a horse thief (they don't care which.) He wounds the sheriff and escapes, but now has a price on his head.
